All content area and co-curricular classes at The Sacred Heart School of Glyndon are based upon the curriculum for Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of Baltimore. This curriculum is infused with Catholic teachings, principles and values while incorporating the most rigorous of current national and/or state standards.
Religion: The Sadlier religion series, We Believe, is the text in use in all grades at The Sacred Heart School of Glyndon. Students are first introduced to God’s love through family, the person of Jesus and the concept of church. Their faith develops and matures through study of the Commandments, the Saints, and increasingly in-depth scripture study. Sacramental preparation is offered in second grade for our Catholic students who will participate in First Reconciliation and First Eucharist.
Special Area Classes: Beginning in Pre-kindergarten our students are offered a different special area class each day. These classes include Spanish, physical education, art, music, computer and library. The inclusion of these classes along with a variety of extra-curricular clubs and groups work together to provide a robust program that enable us to nurture the special interests and talents of each unique child of God.
Resource: The Resource program exists to serve the needs of our students with documented learning differences who might need additional services such as untimed testing, class notes, the use of assistive technology, or a less distracting testing environment. Our resource director, teachers and testing specialist all work together with parents to put in place appropriate classroom accommodations and modifications as recommended by educational testing and assessments.
Pre-kindergarten: Students in our 3 and 4 year-old mixed-age classrooms are developing on so many levels. Through the use of the comprehensive Creative Curriculum for Preschool and age-appropriate elements of Recipe for Reading, our youngest students learn through explorations in literacy, science and math. Social growth and understandings are developed through the introduction of classroom rules and routines.
Primary: Kindergarten through Grade Three. Our kindergarten students have the very important task of developing their reading skills and mathematical foundations. The research-based Recipe for Reading program meets our kindergarten students where they are on the developmental continuum using a multi-sensory approach that teaches reading and writing together. Phonics and handwriting instruction begin and continue to be an important part of the entire literacy program through the Grade Three. Spelling rules and conventions are directly taught and assessed weekly beginning in first grade. Homework is also assigned nightly so that students have additional practice opportunities and work toward mastery of important skills. The Journeys reading series is introduced in Grade One and continues until Grade Five. The Houghton Mifflin math series is introduced in kindergarten and continues through the fifth grade enabling our students to benefit from a consistent math vocabulary and skill development that is both sequential and methodical. The memorization of math facts and computation is emphasized in conjunction with mathematical concepts. Technology is fully integrated with instruction via the use of IPad minis and Smart Boards in all classrooms.
Intermediate: Grades Four and Five. As student literacy skills develop further, they begin to move beyond the reading text into novel study and advanced vocabulary work. They are no longer learning to read but instead are reading to learn. Cursive handwriting which was introduced in Grade Three, now becomes the mandated method of writing. Book projects assigned each trimester encourage the reading of multiple genre outside the classroom and afford an important opportunity for student writing. Grammar study, long a hallmark of Catholic education, begins in earnest as students learn the conventions of formal written English. Additionally, all reports are presented orally to foster the development of public speaking skills. In Grades Four and Five, multiplication facts are reviewed and committed to memory so that the more difficult work of long division can be tackled along with the brand new world of fractions and decimals. In science, students now visit the science each day where they learn lab safety, perform experiments, use microscopes, and explore inventors and inventions. Technology is fully integrated with instruction via the use of 1-1 HP Stream devices and Smart Boards in all classrooms.
Middle School: Grade Six through Grade Eight. Middle school students enjoy an increased level of independence coupled with greater expectations for organizational and time management skills. More long-range projects are introduced across the content areas and higher-level, critical thinking and writing become the standard rather than the exception. In English-Language Arts, students begin to use the rigorous Sadlier-Oxford Vocabulary Workshop series which delves into more complex word study including Latin and Greek word origins and a focus on words likely to be encountered on standardized testing instruments they will see in high school and beyond. Novels, plays, poems, expository essays and short stories are read and analyzed for literary elements. Research writing is taught and culminates in the writing of a thesis-oriented research paper in Grade Eight. The art of debate and public speaking are emphasized so that every Grade Eight student is ready to write and deliver an in-depth speech to their peers and teachers; the very best are selected and presented in an annual oratorical competition. Math students pursue pre-Algebra in Grade Six, and Algebra I in Grades Seven and Eight. A select group of Grade Eight students will study Geometry. In our state-of-the art science lab, our students study earth and life science along with an introduction to physics and chemistry. Dissections and mini-labs occur on a regular basis and all middle school students engage in a yearly science fair project and presentation. Technology is fully integrated with instruction via the use of 1-1 HP Stream devices and Smart Boards in all classrooms.
