The Academic Day

The official hours of our academic day are 8:10 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Pre-kindergarten includes a half day options which runs 8:10 a.m. -11:30 a.m. Students may arrive as early as 7:45 a.m., when they may gather in our cafeteria before homeroom begins. At 7:55 a.m., students go to their homerooms, and they must be present in their homerooms by 8:10 a.m. The homeroom period includes attendance and our morning announcements, featuring student led, community wide prayer, broadcast through our internal television system.

At 8:20 a.m., classes begin. Students in Grades Four through Eight travel through eight academic periods. Their classes each day include math, religion, science, social studies, a specials area class, a block period (90 minutes) of language arts, and one period is reserved for lunch and recess. Students in Kindergarten through Grade Three cover these same subjects, but their schedule is structured to accommodate the needs of young learners. Students in Kindergarten and Grade One are in self-contained classrooms, remaining with their homeroom teacher throughout the day, except for the special area classes, though the full grade comes together for lunch and recess. Students in Second and Third Grade begin to switch between homeroom teachers for some subjects, in preparation for the full rotation of changing classes in Fourth Grade.

Our students end their day with a study hall, which takes place with their homeroom teachers and lasts about twenty-five minutes. Students may see their teachers for extra help, to review anything they learned that day and help build mastery, or they may begin their homework or check in with partners for group work. This time also helps students build a strong relationship with their homeroom teachers, who work diligently to support their learning and growth throughout the year. At 2:55 p.m., we close our day with prayer and dismiss to either our school side or church side parking lots. We ask for our parents to arrange transportation so that students are picked up at 3:00 p.m., though we have a late room to help in the event a parent is unexpectedly delayed. Students in the late room must be picked up by 3:15 p.m.

Before and After Care
Sacred Heart is proud to partner with ABC Care, a nationally accredited provider of quality child care, school before and after care programs, and summer camp programs. At Sacred Heart, ABC Care maintains a professional staff of competent, caring individuals who work with all of our children Preschool through Grade 8 in age appropriate groups. The before care program begins at 6:45 a.m., and after care runs until 6:15 p.m. In after care, students have access to our playgrounds, weather permitting, and our gym, and have many different options for both studying/homework and for active play. The Sacred Heart branch of ABC Care has a website with more information, available here. They offer multiple packages of rates depending on total days of the week, etc.

A number of van services also exist for the end of the school day. These companies drive students to local areas such as Reisterstown and Owings Mills, with different drop off schedules. The school maintains contact information for these programs, and we encourage you to call for more information.
