We are pleased to share that Middle School Math and Religion teacher, Mrs.Sue Surine, has been chosen as Teacher of the Year!
Mrs. Surine has been so instrumental in the formation of two new initiatives that she created for our religion curriculum: Faith in Action Fridays, and a prayer service she developed with her students for Stations of the Cross during Lent. Faith in Action Fridays provide an opportunity for middle school students to "put their faith in action" through service to the school community. The students work with the younger students teaching, mentoring, pairing, and learning together through engaging actively in lessons with them in all subject areas. The Stations of the Cross activity that Mrs. Surine created is a presentation that is shared with the whole school and created entirely by the students under her direction.
Mrs. Surine initiated our school-wide student resource program. She advocated for students with accommodations and worked 1:1 with students in pull-out/push-in models to support classroom teachers in strengthening math skills and concepts. She reviewed IEPS, 504's, and private testing and then created individual accommodations lists for each student with documented learning differences.
Through Mrs. Surine's expert math instruction and work with 8th-grade students to prepare for the HSPT, our scores in math have steadily increased over the last 4 years. Mrs. Surine offers summer camps for incoming 7/8th graders in HSPT prep, pre-algebra concepts, and test-taking strategies. She initiated the use of IXL online so that her students could work at their own pace to build math skills. Mrs. Surine also introduced and facilitated the Catholic Math League at Sacred Heart. This is a national math competition to develop test-taking skills for better student performance on achievement tests.
We are so blessed to have Mrs. Surine as a member of our school faculty. We hope that you will join us in congratulating her on being recognized as Teacher of the Year!
